Discovery of a Very Highly Extinguished Supernova in a Luminous Infrared Galaxy

We report the discovery of a confirmed supernova (SN) and a supernova-candidate in near-infrared images from the ALTAIR/NIRI adaptive optics system on the Gemini-North Telescope and NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. The Gemini images were obtained as part of a near-infrared K band search for highly-obscured SNe in the nuclear regions of luminous infrared galaxies. SN 2008cs apparent in the ...

Discovery of a Very X-ray Luminous Galaxy Cluster at Z = 0.89 in the Warps Survey

We report the discovery of the galaxy cluster ClJ1226.9+3332 in the Wide Angle ROSAT Pointed Survey (WARPS). At z = 0.888 and LX = 1.1× 10 45 h 50 erg s −1 (0.5− 2.0 keV) ClJ1226.9+3332 is the most distant X-ray luminous cluster currently known. The mere existence of this system represents a huge problem for Ω0 = 1 world models. At the modest (off-axis) resolution of the ROSAT PSPC observation ...

Discovery of a very luminous megamaser during a radio flare in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348

We report the detection of a new H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348 with the MPIfR 100 m telescope in Effelsberg. With an apparent isotropic luminosity of LH2O ' 420L the maser is the third most luminous maser discovered so far. The detected line is unusually broad (∆v ' 130 km s−1), is redshifted by ∼ 130 km s−1 from the systemic velocity, and is asymmetric with a pronounced blue wi...

Sn 2005kd: Another Very Luminous, Slowly Declining Type Iin Supernova

CCD U BV RI photometry is presented for type IIn SN 2005kd. The maximum luminosity exceeded MV = −19.8, and SN remained brighter than −18 mag for about 400 days. While overall photometric evolution is quite similar to SN 1997cy, SN 2005kd shows a plateau at phases between 119 and 311 days past explosion, which is a unique feature for SN IIn.

SN 1996cr: Confirmation of a Luminous Type IIn Supernova in the Circinus Galaxy

We have recently confirmed SN 1996cr as a late-time type IIn supernova (SN) via VLT spectroscopy and isolated its explosion date to ∼1 yr using archival optical imaging. We briefly touch upon here the wealth of optical, X-ray, and radio archival observations available for this enigmatic source. Due to its relative proximity (3.8±0.6 Mpc), SN 1996cr ranks among the brightest X-ray and radio SNe ...
